"Follow me, and let the dead bury their dead." l assume that the meaning of this is something along the lines of; those who do not accept Jesus and follow him are dead, in the sense that they will not share in eternal life. Does anyone know if my thinking is correct? Am I missing some other point Jesus is trying to make? It's such a powerful, and I must admit eerie statement, that I want to make sure that I am understanding it correctly.
Thanks so much for this source. The interpretation presented there is quite interesting and something I would have never even know to have considered otherwise.
I'm confused as to what this means as well. My guess to what he means by this is...let those who have no life (Jesus) in them attend to bury the dead...but those who have life in him have more important things to do (like evangelize and follow Christ's example...but then why would burying the dead be one of the corporal works of mercy? I am also very confused as to why Jesus tells the cured not to tell anyone about his healing them...and they do it anyway.
We attend one of the Bible study groups at SJE. Our group leader just explained last week that Jesus often told the Jewish people not to tell anyone of his miracles because he knew that the Jewish people would want Him to become a king in the political sense which would not fulfil his mission. He told us that Jesus would tell the Gentiles to spread he news of his miracles because they did not have the expectation of Him taking the role of a king..
