I'm still having serious difficulty with Job - why was God talking to the devil and then let him have at Job, a good man - just to prove a point? I was told that this was not a true story by someone, but rather written to prove a point about not understanding the ways of God and why He allows things to happen. I have not seen or read anything to that effect. Thoughts? Also, who are these people that Job is talking to or listening to these past few days? Are they friends that stop over to make him feel worse? One day it is Eli'phaz the next day it is Zophar or Bildad? Can anyone please tell us who they are and why they are important? Thanks, Lisa
Well we know from the Scriptures that Satan has access to God so the idea of him talking with God in this book is understandable. Also when we think of our lives we only include our earthly lives whereas God looks at the earthly and the eternal. If something or someone is lost here the big idea is do they show up in eternity or not? When Job lost family members (10) he was given back 10 more after his testing. I for one believe that Job was real and the conversations were real. In II Timothy 3:16-17 we are told that "all Scripture is inspired by God ...", so we can be assured that the story of Job is truthful otherwise the Church Fathers would not have included it in the canon of the Bible. Now some other folks say it is fiction and only a story but that is their story not mine. And as far as the "boys" stopping by and talking to their friend Job, well we all have that in our lives as our friends and families try to tell us how to live our lives and all the things that we have done wrong. No Job did exist in my mind and possibly was written around the time of Jacob. As of today we do not know where the land of Uz was located, but someday like most things in the Bible, God will show us in His time just where it was. All testing and trials are painful just like they were for Job but the joy comes when we are faithful to our God that like the words in Romans 8:28 say, "all things work together for good to those who know the Lord and are called according to His purpose". We make mistakes, God lovingly corrects them and leads us to Himself if we are willing to walk His ways here on earth.
