I'm still reading but am appalled daily by oll the killings! When does this story turn around? When do we get past this "psycho" God who is intent on killing off everyone but the Isrealites and get to the loving, forgiving, compassionate God who "respects" life? I don't think this is a book I'd want to read again.
One of the things that some folks experience is the magnitude of deaths that have taken place over the thousands of years that the Scriptures document for us. Since we know that God is a loving God, then why all the death of those opposed to Israel? God started out with Abraham and created the people of Israel with whom He wanted to have as His own people. However then just like now, there were millions of people who rejected God and all that He tried to offer them through the nation of Israel if they would just turn from their sins and worship Him instead of idols or animals or individuals. But they would not and in the process of refusing God's ways, they tried to kill off God choosen peole the nation of Israel. God responded by protecting the nation that He loved while still trying to get other nations to respect Israel. They would not and just like Iran today, they stated that they wanted to wipe the nation of Israel off the face of the earth. God would not allow that to happen and fought for Israel to the point that they have survived the test of time whereas many nations have tried to eliminate them permanently. I do not know if you will read on to the end of the Bible or not, but if you do, you will find that God's love is there for each of us to chose. At the Cross one thief rejected Jesus and one thief accepted Jesus as God's Son. Not much has changed in 2,000 years. Today some accept the offer of love and forgiveness that God offers through His Son Jesus and others stick up their noses at Jesus thereby sealing their fate for all of eternity. Jesus loved us so much that He was willing to go to Hell for us so that He would not have to go to Heaven without us. Just like in the Old Testament that you are reading, the final choice is up to us; Heaven or Hell. But the good news is that we can make a choice just like the folks in the Old Testament times were able to do.
